Car Scissor Lifts for Home Garages and Shops
A car scissor lift raises a vehicle on two hydraulic, criss-crossing platforms instead of posts. Because there are no columns or overhead beams, a scissor lift fits in tight bays and low-ceiling garages, and many portable models roll out of the way when you're done. Car Lift Direct carries scissor car lifts from Atlas, AMGO, Katool, Tuxedo, Titan and Daytona, from 6,000 lb portable mid-rise lifts to 16,000 lb scissor alignment lifts.
How to Choose the Right Scissor Lift
- Lift height: Low-rise lifts raise the vehicle a short distance for wheel, brake, tire and body work. Mid-rise lifts go higher, so you can work comfortably on a stool or crouch underneath. Full-rise scissor lifts raise the vehicle high enough to stand under it. Check the maximum lifting height on each product page.
- Portable vs. fixed: Portable mid-rise and low-rise lifts like the Atlas 6MR, AMGO MR06 and Katool KT-X66 move around the shop and store against a wall. Full-rise, flush-mount and in-ground lifts like the AMGO XL-9F and Atlas FM9SL stay in place for a cleaner, permanent setup.
- Capacity: 6,000–8,000 lb lifts handle most cars, SUVs and light trucks. Choose a 9,000 lb or larger lift for heavier vehicles, and a 12,000–16,000 lb scissor alignment lift for alignment and heavy-duty shop work.
- Lock release: Manual, pneumatic and electric lock releases are available. Electric lock-release models like the Katool KT-X85 and KT-X90E let you lower the lift without an air supply.
- Open center and frame access: Open-center lifts like the Atlas 6PL leave the middle of the car clear for exhaust, transmission and drivetrain work.

What's the difference between low-rise, mid-rise and full-rise scissor lifts?
The difference is how high they lift. Low-rise lifts are best for wheels, tires, brakes and body work. Mid-rise lifts give more room underneath for suspension and undercarriage work. Full-rise lifts raise the vehicle high enough to stand underneath, similar to a 2-post or 4-post lift.
Is a scissor lift good for a home garage?
Yes. Scissor lifts are popular for home garages because they need no overhead clearance and very little floor space. Portable mid-rise and low-rise models can be rolled aside when not in use, so you can still park in the garage.
Do scissor lifts need a high ceiling?
No. Scissor lifts have no posts or overhead beams, so the only height you need is enough to raise the vehicle to the lift's maximum height. That makes them a good choice for garages where a 2-post or 4-post lift won't fit.
Does a scissor lift need to be bolted to the floor?
Many portable mid-rise and low-rise scissor lifts don't need to be anchored and can be moved around the shop. Full-rise, flush-mount and in-ground lifts are installed permanently and have their own floor or pit requirements. Check the installation manual for each model before you order.
What power does a scissor lift need?
It depends on the model. Many portable scissor lifts run on a 110V power unit, while larger full-rise and alignment scissor lifts often need 220V. Pneumatic lock-release models also need an air supply. The requirements are listed on each product page.
Should I get a scissor lift or a 2-post lift?
Choose a scissor lift if you have a low ceiling, limited floor space or want a lift you can move. Choose a 2-post lift if you need the most open access to the undercarriage and have the ceiling height for it.
