Tire Changers for Shops and Home Garages

A tire changer clamps the wheel to a rotating turntable, breaks the tire bead and uses a mount/demount head to remove and install the tire without damaging the rim. A tire changer machine turns a slow, rim-scratching job into a quick one. Car Lift Direct carries tire changers from Atlas, Katool, Triumph, Tuxedo, Titan, Daytona and iDEAL, from manual and motorcycle tire changers to fully automated truck tire changers.

How to Choose the Right Tire Changer

  • Wheel and tire size: Check the rim clamping range and maximum tire diameter on each product page. Extra-large rim-clamp models handle bigger truck and SUV wheels, and dedicated truck tire changers handle semi, bus and agricultural tires.
  • Swing-arm vs. tilt-back: Swing-arm tire changers are compact and affordable. Tilt-back machines tilt the tower out of the way, so the mount head returns to the same position for every wheel, which speeds up high-volume work.
  • Rim-clamp vs. center-post: Rim-clamp (wheel-clamp) tire changers grip the wheel from the outside or inside of the rim. Center-post machines like the Atlas Platinum PTC400 and PTC500 lock the wheel through the center bore, which protects expensive custom wheels.
  • Assist arms and bead blasters: Assist arms push down stiff sidewalls on low-profile and run-flat tires. Bead blasters seat stubborn beads with a burst of air. Leverless models like the Tuxedo TC-1300 reduce the risk of scratching the rim.
  • Motorcycle and manual tire changers: For motorcycles, ATVs and small shops, we also carry motorcycle tire changers and manual tire changers like the Katool KT-2002.

Tire Changer FAQs

How much does a tire changer cost?

Tire changers on our site currently range from about $500 to $14,500. Manual and motorcycle tire changers start around $500. Most rim-clamp shop tire changers run about $1,200–$5,400. Center-post and premium tilt-back machines cost more, and heavy-duty truck tire changers run about $4,400–$14,500. Financing is available through Approve and Shop Pay. What's the difference between a swing-arm and tilt-back tire changer?

On a swing-arm tire changer, the mount head swings to the side between wheels. On a tilt-back tire changer, the whole tower tilts back and returns to the same setting, so you don't need to readjust for each wheel of the same size. Tilt-back machines are faster for high-volume shops.

Do I need an assist arm?

If you work on low-profile, run-flat or stiff-sidewall tires, an assist arm makes mounting much easier and reduces the risk of damaging the tire or wheel. Many shops consider an assist arm essential for modern performance tires.

Can a tire changer handle truck tires?

Standard tire changers handle passenger car, SUV and light-truck tires within their listed rim range. For semi, bus and other heavy-duty tires, choose a dedicated truck tire changer like the Atlas TTC301, Katool KT-T160 or Tuxedo TC-770-T.

What do I need to run a tire changer?

Most shop tire changers need a compressed air supply and electrical power. The required air pressure and voltage are listed on each product page. Manual tire changers don't need power or air.

Should I buy a tire changer and wheel balancer combo?

If you need both machines, a tire changer and wheel balancer combo is the simplest way to set up a complete tire service bay in one purchase.
